¿QUÉ ES LA MIOPÍA?

WHAT IS MYOPIA?

It is a common vision condition in which close objects appear clear and distant objects appear blurry. It occurs when the shape or size of the eye, or the shape of the cornea, causes light rays to bend (refract) incorrectly. Light rays that should be focused on the nerve tissues at the back of the eye (Macula) are focused in front of the Macula and 20/20 vision is not obtained

Myopia normally progresses during childhood and adolescence, and usually stabilizes between the ages of 20 and 40. Myopia tends to run in families.

An examination of your eyes, performed by an Optometrist, can confirm the diagnosis of myopia.

HOW IS MYOPIA CORRECTED?

Optical correction with Monofocal lenses for distance vision with negative spheres is the main and first treatment for myopia. That is, the use of appropriate GLASSES graduated to the diopters that the patient requires.

The other treatments are with the use of Contact Lenses or going to corneal refractive surgery (LASIK), it is currently a safe procedure and corrects myopia up to 6 diopters, hyperopia up to 5 diopters and low regular astigmatisms.
